What is the difference between covert hypnosis and normal hypnosis?

During normal hypnosis an induction is used to put a person into the hypnotic state. The induction process shuts down a part of the mind called the critical factor. Usually the critical factor regulates which suggestions are allowed into the subconscious mind.

In normal waking consciousness the critical factor can reject suggestions that conflict with those already accepted. However, when a person is under hypnosis the critical factor is shut down and suggestions can enter the subconscious mind very easily.

When a suggestion gains entry to the subconscious mind it is processed as though it is true. The subconscious mind does not reason, it simply follows orders and runs programs.

During covert hypnosis, special language patterns are used to bypass the critical factor. This allows suggestions to gain access to the subconscious mind without the need of an induction. This means that you can program a person to obey a command during a normal conversation.

For obvious reasons, covert hypnosis is most commonly used during sales presentations.

Covert hypnosis in action

Here's a very simple example of the way sales people are already using covert hypnosis on you.

Ambiguous words are often used to convey one meaning to your conscious mind and another to your subconscious. Perhaps the most prolific of these is the phrase 'By now...'

Listen out for this one. Sales people use it a lot.

The 'By now' technique is often used towards the end of a presentation. It sounds perfectly innocent, 'By now, you may like to take a look at a few samples.'

The ambiguity of the word 'by' allows the (rather crude) embedded command "Buy Now" to be peppered throughout any presentation.

I know this doesn't sound like much, but the overall effect of combining many covert techniques is very powerful. The following metaphor (originally from Igor Ledochowski) explains this beautifully...

The accumulation effect of covert hypnosis

Imagine that you have a pencil. If you wanted to, you could snap that pencil very easily. Being able to snap the pencil represents your ability to resist covert hypnosis. One pencil = one covert hypnosis pattern.

Snapping one pencil is easy. Snapping two pencils is easy. When we get to three or four is starts to become a little more difficult. By the time we reach eight it's almost impossible.

Every time a hypnotist adds another covert pattern to the conversation it's like adding another pencil. When you consider that a single sentence could easily include 4 or 5 covert patterns you suddenly realize how powerful covert hypnosis is.

Imagine how many covert patterns you could hide in a sales presentation.

Imagine how many covert patterns you could hide in a 'seemingly' normal conversation at a bar.

This brings us on to the second most common use of covert hypnosis...

Seduction

Here is a simple truth that might shock you...

Using covert hypnosis to make someone fall in love with you is very easy.

There are many covert patterns that are specifically designed for seduction. However, I will say this... If you seduce a person with covert hypnosis you'd better be able to back it up.

I like to think of covert hypnosis as getting your foot in the door, or breaking the ice.

If you're a decent guy, but you're shy, and don't know how to approach women, covert hypnosis is going to change your life. But if you're a jerk that just wants to use covert hypnosis to add notches to the bedpost, don't expect anything to last.

Using covert hypnosis to get someone to fall in love with you

I'm going to give you a very easy technique that you can use to persuade people to like (or even fall in love with) you.

As I said, this technique is very very easy. But don't let that fool you. It works, and it's very powerful.

All you have to do is make a subtle gesture to yourself, such as casually tapping your chest, on certain words.

The best way to use this one is during a perfectly normal conversation. Perhaps with a work colleague. First of all find out what character traits the person you are influencing admires. Then simple gesture to yourself every time you say a word that is related to those traits.

For example, you might like to gesture to yourself on words such as, 'sexy, exciting, passionate or romantic'.

If you were trying to tell a foreigner your name you would probably do this automatically. You'd gesture to yourself as you said your name and the other person would instinctively understand. The subconscious mind recognizes this gesture to mean 'This is me, this is what I am.'

When you gesture to yourself on specific words, those words are connected to you. Subconsciously, the other person starts to think of you in that way. The result... they like you, but they have no idea why.

As I'm sure you've already realized, this technique can be used in many situations. If you want to increase your chances of getting a pay rise, gesture to yourself on words such as, 'reliable, trustworthy, hard working or valuable' every time you chat with your boss.

I hope, by now, that you're already beginning to imagine some of the incredible ways that these simple techniques can transform your life.

(And yes, I did do that on purpose! If you missed it, it was another subtle use of the infamous 'By now' technique. See how easy it is to slip these things in?)

What else can you do?

What I've shared with you so far is just the tip of the ice-berg. Covert hypnosis (or conversational hypnosis if you prefer) is incredibly powerful. It enables you to persuade people to do exactly what you want them to do is almost any situation.

Sales and seduction are the two areas that most people think of first, but it can be used for so much more.

Getting free upgrades, being let off for a ticket, avoiding fines, jumping queues or even just getting the kids to do their homework are all perfectly simple when you understand the power of covert hypnosis.

Personally, my preferred way of using these techniques isn't to force people to like me or anything like that. I use them in an altruistic way to make other people feel good.

(OK, perhaps it's not completely altruistic, I do get a kick out of it... and a 'warm tummy' feeling)

But for me, that's far more rewarding. And besides, I have no need to seduce anyone. I love my partner far too much for that. Although I do have to admit to using covert hypnosis to 'snag her' almost 15 years ago.
